New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton seemingly broke some news when he said the 2020 NFL season would be the final one for Drew Brees during an appearance on ESPN. However, it appears to have been a mistake on his part.

Payton clarified his initial comments regarding Brees' future plans for retirement, via Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk:

“I’m a big dummy,” Payton said.

Payton added that he feels Brees' plan is to make the decision on a yearly basis.

“I think his plan is to take it year by year,” Payton said.

Brees signed a two-year, $50 million contract extension this offseason to stay in New Orleans. Regardless, there is no telling what could happen during that time to affect his desire to stick around.

Fortunately, Payton can take solace in the fact that the Saints will be able to run it back once again in the 2020 campaign. This team has been knocked out of the playoffs in heartbreaking fashion for the third straight season and there was plenty of speculation regarding their plans under center following another underwhelming outing from the 41-year-old.

Brees is confident that he still has plenty left in the tank, including another deep playoff run. New Orleans was able to add another weapon to the passing game with the addition of wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders in free agency.

They were also able to secure his backup and a vital piece of their offense by placing a first-round restricted free agent tender on quarterback Taysom Hill.

Although Payton may have misspoken about Brees' plans for retirement, it is safe to say that developing Hill as a bonafide, future starter this season is a top priority.
