Gayle Benson, owner of the New Orleans Saints and New Orleans Pelicans, was the victim of an attempted carjacking sometime last weekend. According to the New Orleans Saints spokesperson Greg Bensel, Benson wasn't harmed during the altercation.

“While she was very shaken at the time, she was unharmed and is doing fine,” Bensel said in a statement Friday, via nola.com. “She wanted to send her sincere gratitude to the men and women of the New Orleans Police Department that responded so quickly and professionally.”

The assailant fled from the scene before local authorities could arrive after Benson shouted for him to get out of her car. Bensel also confirmed that Benson had apparently been targeted in the attempted vehicle theft. After failing to secure Benson's car, the suspect returned to his Nissan Titan truck that he'd parked beside Benson's car, fleeing the scene shortly afterwards.

Benson, 73, became the sole owner of the Pelicans and Saints after the passing of her husband, the great Tom Benson. This hasn't been the first strike of unfortunate luck for Benson, as she tested positive for COVID-19 back in August as well. The virus worries didn't stop there, as players from the Saints have been in a flurry of uncertainty over the weeks with the NFL dealing with a fluctuating amount of positive test from multiple teams. The Saints were caught in the crossfire at one point during a scheduled matchup with the Detroit Lions.

We hope that Mrs. Benson remains in good health and spirits as she continues to try and build both respected franchises to the level they once attained under her late husband.
