The 2021 NFL Draft is all set to kick off this Thursday, so it's high time to check out what the New Orleans Saints are planning ahead of the huge event.

According to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, the Saints are quietly doing their assignment, which includes the team trying to check the temperature of other teams' interest for a potential trade that would land New Orleans a pick inside the top 10 — of the first round.

The Saints will be drafting late in the first round, as they have the No. 28 overall pick — their first selection for this year's NFL Draft. By the time they get their turn to take a prospect off the board, it's almost certain that guys like Trevor Lawrence, Justin Fields, Mac Jones, Trey Lance, and Zach Wilson are all gone, leaving the Saints a potpourri of lower-rated quarterbacks to choose from if they plan to add depth to that position via this draft. It would definitely take a lot for the Saints to convince any team inside that range to give up its highly valued slot. It remains to be seen whether the Saints are still very much interested in pursuing such a trade.

Drew Brees' retirement just after the Saints made the playoffs and got eliminated by Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the NFC Divisional Round essentially took away a chance for New Orleans to get a higher pick that would have at least given them a chance to score a tier 1 quarterback., That being said, that No. 28 pick can get them a quality skill player who can address some of their other needs. Not a few mock drafts peg them to get a defensive player with that pick, so a cornerback or safety wouldn't be too shabby of an addition for New Orelans.
