On Friday, the Seattle Seahawks backup quarterback, Geno Smith, underwent surgery to remove a cyst on his knee. With him missing some time, Seattle has signed quarterback J.T. Barrett and they also added linebacker Juwon Young.

To make room for the team's new additions, the Seahawks waived Chris Worley and Marwin Evans. The Seahawks will throw Barrett into the mix at quarterback to give Paxton Lynch someone else to take snaps with.

Last season, Barrett went undrafted out of Ohio State and signed with the New Orleans Saints. Throughout the season, Barrett went back and forth from the practice squad to the active roster.

Then, earlier this offseason, Barrett signed a futures contract with New Orleans in January. Unfortunately, the Saints released the second-year quarterback after training camps began.

The Seahawks had a backup quarterback competition going on between Geno Smith and Paxton Lynch entering the preseason. Lynch impressed in his Seahawks debut, completing 11 of his 15 attempts for 109 yards and a touchdown. The former first-round pick of the Denver Broncos also rushed for 38 yards and another touchdown.

Comparatively, Smith struggled to complete his throws, missing six of his nine attempts. Smith would throw for 58 yards before handing the offensive duties to Lynch. It was revealed after the game that Smith has been dealing with a cyst on his knee.

The Seahawks signed Barrett in case Smith isn't able to go by the next preseason game against the Minnesota Vikings on August 18th. Aside from Barrett, the team also added Juwon Young to their 90-man roster.

Young spent time with the Seahawks while he tried out for them in Seattle's rookie minicamp a few months ago.
