Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry dropped a career-high 62 points in a win against the Portland Trail Blazers on Sunday. Curry hit eight 3-point shots and 18 of his 19 free throws in his impressive outing, but it wasn't just Curry's pull-up shooting that allowed him to score 62 points.
The secret was Draymond Green.
On the daily Locked On Warriors podcast, host Wes Goldberg reacted to Stephen Curry's 62-point game and explained why it wasn't just about Curry going insane shooting the ball. It was also Green who unlocked Curry:
Article Continues BelowWes Goldberg: All Stephen Curry needed was a little bit of help and that help was in the form of Draymond Green, who ran a master course in running the offense last night, an absolute clinic on running the offense. Draymond had eight assists in the game, only scored one point by just splitting a couple of free throws, didn't get his first point until two minutes left in the third quarter. He didn't bother taking shots. He ran the offense. That's all he's gonna have to do this year. Get Stephen Curry off the ball, let Draymond Green supervise the offense, and that's what you have.
Before last night, Draymond Green had played in just one game. 20 minutes, he didn't look great, definitely rusty, and a little bit out of shape. He wasn't closing out the way he needed to on defense. He went back to watch the film and said I gotta be better than that. So he got his first game out of the way, got his wind, then comes out last night and dominates by scoring one point. Steph Curry had 62 points on the night he's a +20 in the game. Draymond Green is a +22, so the Warriors were technically better when Draymond Green was on the court than even when Steph was on the court putting 62 points on Portland. That's how much Draymond Green dominated in that game and that's what it's going to take. It's not going to take Steph scoring 62 points every night for the Warriors to win games this season. It's going to take Draymond Green running the offense and Stephen Curry doing what it is that he does off the ball so well.
