The Rookie of the Year debate heats up. Players and coaches all over the NBA have voiced out their opinions. Now, it's top candidates Ben Simmons of the Philadelphia 76ers and Donovan Mitchell of the Utah Jazz going at it.

Mitchell recently wore a sweatshirt showing what a definition of a rookie is and news quickly circulated online. As posted by Complex, below is Mitchell donning the said sweatshirt:

And just after a few hours, Simmons responded to Mitchell's apparent jab:

“What was the definition? If his argument is that I’m not a rookie, if that’s the only argument he has I’m in pretty good shape then. There’s a rule in the NBA for a reason. I’m not gonna wear a sweatshirt tomorrow though.”

The debate is quickly catching fire as the season comes to a close. The 2018 NBA Awards show will be held Monday, June 25, at 9 p.m. ET from the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California. Voters will comprise of sportswriters and broadcasters.

Though they will not vote, several players have voiced out who they believe is deserving of the award. Sixers and Jazz players are campaigning for their respective teammates.

In the middle of the season, Simmons was the top candidate. Yet as the year progressed, Mitchell suddenly entered the discussion.

Then came the doubts that Simmons is not a real rookie since he has already spent time with NBA players, coaches, and staff in the 2016-17 season.

Simmons and Mitchell have aired their side. The ball is now in the hands of the voters.
