The Philadelphia 76ers were finally able to end the Ben Simmons saga on Thursday as they pulled off a blockbuster with the Brooklyn Nets by acquiring superstar James Harden. Now, Joel Embiid has a new running mate who can hopefully propel the Sixers to title contenders. Following the trade, Embiid got brutally honest on how the whole Simmons relationship deteriorated, despite Philly managing to win a lot of ballgames with the duo.
Via Kyle Neubeck of The Philly Voice:
Simmons didn't play for the Sixers all season after his epic meltdown in the playoffs last year. The Aussie cited mental health as the reason he couldn't suit up for the team again, but there's definitely a belief that the 25-year-old wasn't pleased with being second fiddle to Embiid, who is clearly the franchise cornerstone.
Together, Embiid and Simmons won the Eastern Conference in 2020/21 and proved to be one of the more electrifying two-way duos in the entire league for several years. While Simmons was definitely traumatized by the treatment he got from Sixers fans in the postseason, he couldn't put his ego aside and get back to business.
Now, the guard finds himself with a fresh start in Brooklyn, while Embiid will be hoping to finally take Philadelphia to the promised land with the help of Harden.
