Charles Barkley says LeBron James would hurt Ben Simmons, Joel Embiid
Where LeBron James is going to land is already the story of the summer. One of the favorites to land the star from Akron is the Philadelphia 76ers, but Charles Barkley warns that might not end well for Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons if the Sixers snagged the King.
“I’m not gonna let this dude hijack my life,” Barkley said as a guest on The Mike Missanelli Show Tuesday via Yahoo! Sports. “The whole sports world, we sit around like idiots and worry about where this dude is going.”
Barkley says that James needs the ball, but also Embiid and Simmons also need the ball in their hands, so it wouldn’t ever work.
“He’s not coming to the Sixers,” Barkley said. “He’s not coming to the Sixers because he needs the ball, Simmons needs the ball and Embiid needs the ball. That would make Simmons useless.”
Now there is a chance that James could try to change his playing style, to match up with Simmons and Embiid, but James is still in the prime of his career, so why would he change his playing style now.
“He’s not going to give the ball up at this stage of his career,” Barkley said. “He’s not a great shooter, so you can’t play him off the ball. I guarantee you [defenders] would let him shoot threes all night. Guys would love him to shoot threes. … It would hurt Embiid and Simmons going forward.”
Although it would hurt those two individual stats, there is no question the team would be better with James. The question that those two, and the 76ers front office needs to figure out is if that is worth it. Of course, James would still have to decide if he wanted to go to Philly but it seems like there still could be a way that this could work.
