NBA players often choose to hand out their game-worn apparel to fans after games, but Sixers star Ben Simmons left one patron with a confused look on his face after Wednesday night's victory over the Knicks.

Simmons set the social media world on fire last night when he was spotted offering one of his shoes to a fan. As he made his way towards the locker room, Simmons extended the shoe towards the fan, but then took it right back.

The fan, who was stationed near the exit tunnel, was left with a bewildered look on his face:

Within minutes of seeing the fake hand-off, the Twitterverse was in an uproar. As a result, Simmons felt obligated to send out a message of his own, clarifying the circumstances. The Australian-born star says he wanted to give his shoes to a younger Aussie fan who was calling out his name.

The fan who got the short end of the stick was relieved to hear Simmons' explanation. Rather than getting mad about it, he wished Simmons the best during the All-Star break.

Simmons logged 34 minutes in Wednesday night's game, scoring 18 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the field, seven assists, four rebounds, one block and one steal. Joel Embiid recorded his 10th consecutive double-double, scoring 26 points and 14 rebounds. With the win, Philly heads into the break with a 37-21 overall record, which is good for the No. 2 spot in the Atlantic Division standings.

“We're in a good position,” Simmons told ESPN after Wednesday's game.
