While several European giants such as PSG, Man City, and Man United enjoyed spectacular transfer windows, Barcelona was cash-strapped and unable to sign as many players as desired. Aside from losing Lionel Messi due to financial debt, they were only able to bring in Memphis Depay, Sergio Aguero, and Eric Garcia, among a couple of other smaller names.

Barca boss Ronald Koeman spoke on how it's going to be very difficult for his side to compete with other big clubs who splashed the cash this summer. Via ESPN:

“On the one hand I understand it,” Koeman said in response to understanding the supporters' frustrations.

“For everyone that wants the best for Barcelona, it's frustrating, I understand it. On the other hand, we have to be realistic. Economically, the club can't compete with other clubs, with Paris, City, United. That's how it is at the moment.

“We can't demand what has been demanded before at this club. We have to understand the moment the club is in.”

Koeman does have a point. Barcelona didn't really make up for the loss of Messi. PSG was able to add numerous reinforcements such as Sergio Ramos, Gianluigi Donnarumma, and Gini Wijnaldum all on free transfers. Achraf Hakimi was the only player they actually paid a fee for.

City meanwhile, secured the signature of Jack Grealish, who makes their attack even more terrifying. United just reunited with Cristiano Ronaldo, while also inking Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane.

Ex-Barcelona president Josep Bartomeu has really put the La Liga giants in a horrible situation and as a result, it will be tough for them to be a force on the European stage once again. Well, at least for the time being.
