For the first time in six matches, Liverpool clinched a win against Manchester City, as the Reds secured a 3-2 victory in their FA Cup semifinal encounter.
Liverpool had its way over the opening half of the fixture, scoring three unanswered goals to build a commanding 3-0 lead. The reigning Premier League champions failed to record a single shot on target in the first half. However, they did tally a pair of goals in the second half to pull within a score of knotting the match up at 3-3, but Liverpool held on in the end to advance to the 2022 FA Cup Final.
In speaking after the contest to BBC One, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp took some time to evaluate the overall performance from his side, where he noted that the opening half of the contest simply blew him away.
“Absolutely proud, incredible – I think the first half was one of the best we ever played,” Klopp said. “We did all the right stuff, we scored in the right moments, we played an incredible game in the first half, I really loved each second of it.
“The second half started with the goal for Man City and then it opens up – the quality of City is insane and you could see it was a much more open game.”
Liverpool still has an opportunity to clinch what would be a historic quadruple-winning season. Klopp’s side already won the 2021-2022 EFL Cup tournament and remains alive in the FA Cup, Premier League and UEFA Champions League competitions.
For now, Klopp is looking ahead to the hefty schedule that his team will have over the remainder of the campaign.
“The quadruple talk I can't believe it,” Klopp said. “Qualifying for this final makes the quadruple even more difficult.
“I don't think we have a full free week before the last matchday. But we beat the strongest team in the world and that's a pretty special moment.”
Plenty of crucial fixtures will await Liverpool later this month, including the home league clash with Manchester United and the opening leg of its Champions League semifinal tie against La Liga side Villarreal.
