The USMNT is getting a major addition to its ranks in the form of a Bayern Munich youth product. According to reports from ESPN, Malik Tillman is in the process of filing a switch to represent the United States, rather than his native Germany.
The 19-year-old has represented both countries in their youth levels, but now has opted to pursue a career with the United States, where he could one day become a key player, should he live up to his potential. Tillman has been in Bayern's youth academy since 2015, and debuted for the club in 2021 during a German Cup match against Bremer SV, during which he scored in the lopsided 12-0 rout.
In 2021-22, Tillman managed to make four appearances in the Bundesliga, and seven first-team appearances in all competitions. In all, he scored 1 goal, playing a total of 169 minutes for the senior team. Considering he's still 19, breaking into the first team at Bayern Munich even for a handful of games is an impressive accomplishment, and he'll hopefully be able to make an impact for the USMNT for years to come.
Tillman is still in the process of filing his motion with FIFA to change national teams. Barring any unforeseen setbacks, he would be eligible to join the USMNT immediately. His decision comes shortly after missing out on the U-21 European Championship set for June, having not been chosen by Germany's U-21 manager Antonio Di Salvo.
This is yet another significant addition for Greg Berhalter and the USMNT, who could include Tillman on their squad for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
