Patton initially committed to the University of Oregon in 2019 after a distinguished high school career at Woodward High School, where he earned an Honorable Mention All-Region 4-AAAA selection as a senior. He took a redshirt year in 2019 and played sparingly in the pandemic-shortened 2020 season. Over the next two seasons, Patton appeared in a total of ten games but primarily contributed on special teams, recording just 68 yards on 23 carries and one tackle during his tenure with the Ducks.

With one year of eligibility remaining, Patton transferred to Bethune-Cookman. This move marks a significant step for both Patton and Bethune-Cookman, as they look to improve their performance after finishing 3-8 under first-year head coach Raymond Woodie in 2023. Woodie joined the team following Pro Football Hall of Famer Ed Reed's acceptance of the job offer. However, a social media controversy arose that led to the offer being rescinded.

Bethune Cookman struggled to start the 2023 season. After a mid-September win over Division II opponent Savannah State, the team lost six straight games including five in SWAC conference play. The team managed to pull a considerable upset over Alabama A&M with a decisive 31-14 victory en route to the Florida Classic with rival Florida A&M University. However, the team lost to the Willie Simmons-led Rattlers 24-7 to close out a sub-par season for Bethune-Cookman.

Cross Patton isn’t the only high-profile recruit headed to Bethune-Cookman. In January, William Roberts III, son of rapper Rick Ross, also committed to play for the Wildcats. This infusion of talent brings heightened attention and anticipation to the program, adding a layer of excitement for the upcoming season. We're sure to see both rappers in the stands during the season to cheer on the Wildcats.
