The Los Angeles Sparks visit the Chicago Sky on Wednesday as they continue their three-game road trip. They're coming off a win against the Indiana Fever and looking to keep that momentum rolling. But if the Sparks are hoping to get a win, they'll have to do so without head coach Curt Miller who is set to miss the game due to his induction into the Mid-American Conference. Assistant coach Nola Henry will assume head coaching duties in his absence.
Following the announcement that Miller would be enshrined in the MAC Hall of Fame, he took to social media to express his thoughts on such a distinction.
“Humbling honor since the MAC conference has such a rich tradition of women's basketball and many incredible coaches throughout the years,” Miller wrote on social media. “It was an absolute honor to compete with our BGSU teams.”
Miller got his start as a head coach at Bowling Green where he amassed a record of 258-92 from 2001-2012. His tenure included five NCAA Tournament appearances including one Sweet 16 run, as well as three WNIT appearances. His teams won the MAC title eight consecutive seasons. He was named MAC Coach of the Year six times. Following Miller's final season at Bowling Green in 2012, he went on to become head coach at Indiana for two seasons.
Curt Miller's first job in the WNBA actually came with the Sparks during the 2015 season as an assistant on then-head coach Brian Agler's staff. Miller spent one season with the Sparks before becoming the head coach of the Connecticut Sun for seven seasons.
This season is Miller's second with the Sparks. Last year the team finished 17-23 and missed the playoffs.
While Miller will be receiving his honor at the MAC Hall of Fame, assistant coach Nola Henry will be at the helm on the sidelines for the Sparks game against the Sky. This is Henry's second season with the Sparks. She joined the team along with Miller last season as a player development coach. Henry worked alongside Miller with the Sun as an assistant basketball operations manager for two seasons.
