San Antonio Spurs star DeMar DeRozan is discussing a potential contract extension with the franchise, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic. DeRozan has a player option for next season worth $27.7 million, which makes clarity on his future of utmost importance as both sides have greased the wheels toward discussing an extension.

DeRozan, however, said during the Spurs’ Media Day on Monday that his focus was solely on this season:

“That’s not on my mind,” DeRozan said. “My focus is to go out there and hoop. How everything will unfold, that’s how it will unfold.”

The Spurs star recently made a trip to Wyoming with his family, one he used to relax and get in the right frame of mind as he approached a second season with the Spurs:

“He’s in a good space,” a high-level Spurs staffer told The Athletic’s Jabari Young on the team’s media day.

DeRozan can get a maximum of four years and around $150 million on a contract extension with the Spurs as he comes off his fourth season of the five-year, $139 million deal he signed with the Toronto Raptors back in 2016.

The 6-foot-7 wing put up 21.2 points per game last season and posted career highs in rebounds (6.0) and assists (6.2), while dialing back on his 3-point shooting, attempting the least amount of triples since his second year in the league (0.6 per game).

The 30-year-old has played 74 games or more in the last four seasons, which speaks to his conditioning, despite playing heavy minutes for the bulk of his career.
