Marco Belinelli, most known for his stint with the San Antonio Spurs, is returning to his home country after inking a three-year deal with Italian basketball club Virtus Bologna.
The deal was first reported by La Gazzetta Dello Sport. It was later confirmed by Virtus Bologna then by Belinelli himself via Twitter. The report noted that the 34-year-old former member of the Spurs did not receive any attractive offers from NBA teams this offseason.
Belinelli, the 18th overall pick in the 2007 NBA Draft, spent 13 seasons in the NBA. He has played for the Golden State Warriors, the Toronto Raptors, the New Orleans Hornets, the Chicago Bulls, the Atlanta Hawks, and the Philadelphia 76ers, along with the Spurs.
Most known for his stint with the Spurs, he won his first NBA title in 2014 when the Gregg Popovich-helmed squad defeated the powerhouse Miami Heat squad in five games. Belinelli is known for his toughness and versatility on both ends of the floor. Standing 6-foot-5, Belinelli usually plays the two spot but can easily move up the three.
For his NBA career, including the Spurs, the Italian averaged 9.7 points, 2.1 rebounds, and 1.7 assists across 22.7 minutes. He's a career 42.4 percent shooter from the field and 37.6 from downtown.
In this post-Spurs venture at Virtus Bologna, Belinelli will join European stud and former Los Angeles Clippers guard Milos Teodosic. Miami Hurricanes star Julian Gamble will also be part of the team. This will also mark a comeback for Belinelli as Virtus Bologan is his first professional team way back when he was 16. The season, which kicked off in late September, is scheduled to go through May 2021.
