It’s not easy to dissect and determine just what exactly it is that embattled San Antonio Spurs forward Kawhi Leonard and his camp are planning for the player’s immediate future. One thing that most people are certain of, however, is that Leonard wants out of San Antonio, but that only happens if they buy him out (which isn’t very ideal) or trade him.

Leonard reportedly had expressed his interest to get shipped to the Los Angeles Lakers, but any discussions linking him to La La Land have ebbed significantly, especially after the Lakers’ acquisition of LeBron James. Enter the LA Clippers, who are among those interested in working out a transaction that would bring the talented two-way forward to their fold.

Speculation of Leonard becoming a Clipper soon should only intensify following a report of Spurs general manager RC Buford’s presence in Nevada to watch a Summer League matchup between the Clippers and the Washington Wizards on Wednesday, per Tomer Azarly of ClutchPoints.

The Clippers may have the assets that San Antonio would want in the event that the Spurs finally relent to Leonard’s trade request.

It’s not that difficult to attach some underlying meaning to Buford’s attendance at a Clippers’ exhibition contest. For one, the Clippers have two exciting rookies in their bag, namely Jerome Robinson and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who are young assets San Antonio could build the team around in the future. If it’s that pair of players that was the reason behind Buford’s visit, then he must have liked what he saw, as Robinson scored 15 points while Gilgeous-Alexander pumped out 17 more in an 89-74 win.

There remains a possibility that Leonard finds his way to the Lakers, but don’t count out the Clippers from intercepting the former Finals MVP.
