The OG Steam Deck LCD's prices will drop during the 2024 Steam Summer Sale. Back in November 2023, Valve launched the new and improved version of their handheld gaming PC known as the Steam Deck OLED. Unfortunately, its sales didn't do as well compared to its predecessor. Despite these unfortunate circumstances, it appears that the video game company plans on maintaining the OLED's current price point.

While this may come as a bummer to some who want better hardware, it's worth pointing out that the Steam Deck LCD version is still one of the best handheld PC ports there is out there. With that in mind, players interested are fortunate to be able to purchase the handheld at its all-time low price.

Steam Deck Goes on Sale

From the time of this writing until July 11, 2024, players can purchase the Steam Deck LCD model for 15% off. Particularly, the 512 GB and 64 GB variants will be on sale. This is the last chance consumers can purchase these variants of the LCD model. Valve discontinued the reproduction of the two models and decided to roll with the 256 GB variant as the Steam Deck's entry point.

The 512 GB version now costs $381.65, while the 64 GB variant costs $296.65. While this doesn't seem like much of a discount compared to their original prices, it's still a huge leap considering how the handheld device rarely went on sale. However, at this point Valve is trying to get rid of the remaining stocks they have of the two LCD variants so they wouldn't completely go to waste. With that in mind, it's possible that interested consumers might not be able to secure themselves a device if they don't act fast.

It's also worth noting that the prices of the 256 GB LCD variant and the 512 GB and 1 TB OLED variants won't drop during the 2024 Steam Summer Sale.

Why Valve Discontinued the 64 GB and 512 GB Steam Deck LCD

Back when the Steam Deck OLED launched back in November 2023, Valve slowly discontinued the production of two LCD variants. The only LCD model that remains is the 256 GB version. While the video game company didn't specify their reasons, it's likely due to their prioritizing production cost of the OLED.

The OLED is supposedly a better version of the LCD model. However, if we're going to look at the direct comparison between the two. There aren't much differences aside from the screen's quality and size. Both models practically have the same CPU, GPU, and RAM. The only other upgrades the OLED has are a slightly better WiFi and Bluetooth connection, slightly longer battery life, and a slightly lighter weight.

Given these factors, we personally still recommend going for the cheaper option by purchasing the LCD version. Fortunately, players can still purchase the 256 GB variant which costs $399.

Based on experience, for an additional cost of approximately $160, gamers can upgrade their rigs to have 2 – 3 TB more storage. That's a total cost of $559 which is $10 more than the 512 GB variant of the Steam Deck OLED. While these consumers may only have the LCD model, they aren't missing out as much. Arguably, with the upgrade that we recommended, they may be getting an even better deal.

It's also worth noting that while there are still stocks of the 64 GB and 512 GB Steam Deck LCD variants on sale, interested gamers should act quickly to maximize the value they're getting when purchasing the handheld device.
