The Pittsburgh Steelers had a disappointing 2019. Changes have to be made if they want to make a deep playoff run in 2020. Bud Dupree should be a key component of the Steelers defense, but there’s a big question whether they’ll be able to keep the defensive end.

The 27-year-old Dupree had a breakout season and will likely be looking at opportunities that will get him big money and a spot with a title contender. GM Kevin Colbert let everyone in the league know that they will not let him walk away without a fight.

Per Steelers Wire’s Curt Popejoy:

“I say this in all seriousness: everything changes as we go through this, free agency, the draft,” Colbert said. “One thing that won’t change is our desire to have him finish his career as a Pittsburgh Steelers.”

The choice of words he utilized to describe Dupree’s situation is a stern warning to almost everyone in the NFL. It’s a promise that they will fight tooth and nail to keep him on the team. However, this may be a case of wishful thinking on the part of the Steelers.

Their salary cap is stretched thin trying to keep as many top players in their employ as possible. Dupree’s breakout puts the team in a pickle, as they cannot spare a pretty penny to give him the wage he thinks he deserves.

Dupree was a terrific pass-rushing option for the Steelers in 2019, notching 17 QB hits, 11.5 sacks, two fumble recoveries, two forced fumbles, and three pass deflections. A team looking for an outstanding defender will not pass up signing him.

Unless a miracle happens and cap space is made, it’s very likely that Dupree will be wearing a different uniform by the time the pre-season starts in August. Or maybe not. Time will tell.
