Yet to even play a single down at the professional level, Pittsburgh Steelers newcomer Benny Snell is already stirring the pot in “The Steel City.”
The former Kentucky Wildcats running back was recently selected by the Steelers in the fourth round of the 2019 NFL Draft and is now looking to fill the shoes of current New York Jets running back Le'Veon Bell — well, sort of.
Snell, who wore No. 26 during his collegiate playing days at Kentucky, apparently wants to sport the same number upon officially joining the Steelers. Of course, Bell, who recently made his way from Pittsburgh to East Rutherford this offseason, did not see his time as a member of the heralded Steelers come to a smooth ending.
“Man, I’m excited,” Snell said after being drafted by the Steelers over the weekend, via Jim Wexell of 247 Sports. “I'm very excited. I want to thank Tomlin and the rest of the staff for having me, and you all just got one of the hardest working, young players that’s coming out in 2019 because I’m going to give my heart and my all.”
With the aforementioned Bell now a member of the Jets, the path is incredibly clear for Steelers running back James Conner to take over as the team's starter in the backfield on an official basis. Last season, in the absence of Bell, Conner served as the Steelers starting running back en route to not only performing well but ultimately reaching the Pro Bowl. Bell wasn't in Pittsburgh in 2018-19 as he was still holding out for a new contract, which eventually came from the Jets.
