The Pittsburgh Steelers made quite the investment to move up and take linebacker Devin Bush with the 10th overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. Fortunately, it seems he has already started to make quite the impression on his new coaches and teammates.
Bush has been getting ample work in with the first and second team in the practices leading up to the preseason opener versus the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. According to Joe Rutter of the Tribune-Review, linebacker coach Jerry Olsavsky feels he has been everything the Steelers hoped for thus far:
“He’s pretty grown,” he said. “That’s the thing. There’s not a lot. He’s doing a real good job of understanding what we’re doing. Sometimes, we switch from day to day. He’s really adaptable. He can do everything. He’s as advertised.”
Outside linebacker T.J. Watt also offered up some high praise for his new teammate.
“He takes whatever you put on his plate, and he’s doing a great job with it,” Watt said. “He’s also being very aggressive. I’ve very impressed with him.”
It is encouraging to see that Bush has already begun to make his presence felt in Pittsburgh. He was drafted with high expectations after the Steelers traded multiple picks to make him the potential successor to linebacker Ryan Shazier on the inside. Olsavsky's comments indicate that he is well on his way to taking up that mantle.
For now, Bush is currently slotted behind linebackers Mark Barron and Vince Williams. With most coaches looking to take a cautious approach to the preseason, the rookie should have plenty of opportunities to prove himself moving forward.
