Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger voiced his frustration with wide receiver James Washington following the team's loss to the Denver Broncos. It seems Washington had no issue with Roethlisberger's comments.

The veteran did not hold back when it came to the rookie's underwhelming performance. According to Ray Fittipaldo of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Washington acknowledged that Roethlisberger has every right to hold him accountable:

“With him being the captain of this team, he has freedom of speech as well as we all do,” Washington said

Roethlisberger did not hold back when it came to Washington's performance in the 2018 NFL season. He noted how the rookie had dropped a crucial pass versus Denver and how he has not proven to be up to the task.

While the veteran's criticisms may seem a bit harsh, they are largely true. The second-round pick has registered just eight catches for 77 yards and a touchdown despite playing an ample amount of snaps on offense.

It should be noted that Roethlisberger is hardly the only quarterback to call out a young receiver for not doing their job. Quarterbacks like Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers have called out pass-catchers on numerous occasions. Elite quarterbacks have every right to point out any shortcomings in the offense.

Regardless, it is encouraging to see Washington have thick skin about the matter. It is important for young players to hold themselves accountable, especially around future Hall of Famers.

Although he may have fallen out of favor with Roethlisberger for now, he should have another opportunity to win back his trust.
