The Pittsburgh Steelers landed an excellent young linebacker when they picked up the recently-released Myles Jack in free agency. The former Jacksonville Jaguar is expected to slot in as a starter on Pittsburgh's defense, and the move to bring him in as resulted in another player's time with the team coming to an end. The Steelers revealed Thursday that they had terminated the contract of linebacker Joe Schobert.

This move isn't all too surprising, as Schobert was expected to lose his spot to Jack after the acquisition of the former first-round pick on Wednesday.

The Steelers will save $7.95 million against the cap with the move to cut Schobert. Schobert had initially signed a five-year, $53.75 million deal with the Jaguars but only played there one season before being dealt to Pittsburgh. While he didn't have a bad season for the Steelers last year, the team felt they'd fare better by replacing Schobert with Jack and subsequently releasing him.

Schobert will now hit free agency where there's likely to be significant interest in the 28-year-old. Teams will be hopeful Schobert can return to his form from 2017 when he made his lone Pro Bowl appearance as a member of the Cleveland Browns. The Browns could be a potential landing spot for Schobert after having traded Mack Wilson to the New England Patriots, That move left Cleveland with a vacancy at linebacker, and of course, they have familiarity with Schobert.

In 2021, Schobert featured in 16 games for the Steelers, recording 112 tackles, 2 tackles for loss, 6 pass breakups, 1 interception, 1 forced fumble, and 1 QB hit.
