The Denver Broncos announced that star quarterback Russell Wilson would be benched for the remainder of the season to guard against $37 million in injury guarantees for next season. This move strongly suggests the Broncos will part ways with the QB this offseason. With that as the most likely outcome, rampant speculation quickly kicked up that the Pittsburgh Steelers would be an excellent Russell Wilson destination.

The Steelers certainly weren’t the only suggested Russell Wilson destination on social media, but the franchise seemed to be the most common.

Nate Davis of USA Today named it one of his top eight landing spots for Wilson, while CBS’s Zach Gelb named the Steelers and the Atlanta Falcons as the two best places the QB could play next season. The Ringer’s Austin Gayle tweeted that the Steelers are the best spot, full stop.

Even former NFL players are weighing in. Former Steelers-killing wide receiver, Chad Johnson, tweeted, “Russell Wilson to the Steelers w/ Pickens & Johnson, thoughts?”

Why Russell Wilson to the Steelers could make sense

Wilson to the Steelers next season is an interesting thought, and could be part of massive offseason upheaval. Kenny Pickett, the team’s 2022 first-round pick has not distinguished himself yet, and is now dealing with injuries.

Additionally, there is also speculation that it could be time for a mutual parting of ways between longtime head coach Mike Tomlin and the franchise. This season has been a tough one, especially with players like George Pickens and Diontae Johnson routinely not giving effort on the field.

If Tomlin does stay, bringing in Wilson may make the most sense. With Tomlin at the helm, the Steelers are a win-now team, and even with his obvious decline the last few seasons, it does seem like Wilson will give the team a better chance to win games than Kenny Pickett.
