Pittsburgh Steelers wide receivers coach Darryl Drake sadly passed away on Sunday morning at the age of 62, the team announced, per ESPN's Jeremy Fowler.

Fowler also shared a message from team president Art Rooney II:

We are at a loss for words following Darryl Drake's passing this morning. Darryl had such an impact on the players he coached and everyone he worked with throughout his entire career. He was a passionate coach and had a tremendous spirit toward life, his family, his faith and the game of football.

Our prayers and thoughts are with his wife, Sheila, his three daughters, his grandchildren and entire family during this difficult time.

Drake had been with the Steelers organization since 2018. Prior to that, Drake coached for NFL franchises Arizona Cardinals and Chicago Bears.

Drake spent two seasons in the NFL as a player after going undrafted in 1979 from Western Kentucky. He spent the 1979 season with the Washington Redskins and 1983 with the Cincinnati Bengals.

After a brief playing career, Drake went back to college to serve as a coach for his Hilltoppers, spending nearly a decade in a variety of coaching roles until 1991. Drake would later coach for Georgia, Baylor, and Texas until he received another NFL opportunity in the early 2000's.

With Drake's passing, the Steelers are left with a vacancy to mentor a wide receiver corps that includes 22-year-old JuJu Smith-Schuster, former second-round pick James Washington, 23, and 25-year-old journeyman Brandon Reilly. Regardless, it'll be a difficult situation to replace the beloved Drake.
