The Charlotte Hornets on Tuesday evening made the surprising move within the Southeast division to acquire former All-Star center Dwight Howard from the Atlanta Hawks in a multi-player trade.

It has immediately thrust them into the picture of being one of the more interesting teams in the Eastern Conference. In light of that move, Hornets head coach Steve Clifford voiced much confidence that Howard could have a tremendous impact on the team next season.

In the last 25 games of the regular season, the Hornets held a sub-par 12-13 record that prevented them from getting over the hump falling five games short of earning the eighth seed in the playoffs. This includes losing the last five contests of the season.

The addition of Howard gives Charlotte an inside presence that the team has been lacking over the last couple of years. Despite seeing a noticeable decline in his production over the last couple of seasons, the 31-year-old is still a major factor defensively and a dependable player on both ends of the floor, especially on the glass.

Howard is coming off a season where he averaged a double-double with 13.5 points and 12.7 rebounds along with 1.2 blocks per game. He has two years remaining on his deal worth $47 million.

This move to the Hornets could provide the opportunity that Howard needs in order to regain his All-Star form and be a major part of the team's success.
