Stranger Things 4 episode 7 ending explained

Stranger Things, Netflix, EntertainmentThe first volume of Stranger Things 4 ends with the show giving enough screentime to the different groups involved. First up is the one in Hawkins, which includes Nancy, Steve, Robin, Eddie, Dustin, Lucas, and Max. As the older members of the group are led down to the lake, they discover a gate opened there with Steve the first one to enter it. As he gets attacked by several demobats, Nancy, Robin, and Eddie come to his rescue and ward the flying beasts off.

While that was going down, Max, Lucas, and Dustin were apprehended by the police and taken back to the Wheelers' residence. Fortunately, this is the same location Steve and company proceeded to in the Upside Down. From there, the two groups found a way to contact each other.  It was then discovered that the locations where Vecna killed his previous victims are being transformed into gates. This discovery spurs Nancy and the others to race to Eddie's house in the Upside Down to make their escape from there.

From that location, the group discovers a gateway on the ceiling. Dustin and the others throw a makeshift rope into the Upside Down as Steve, Robin, and Eddie make their way out. Before Nancy can get out, Vecna takes possession of her mind after traumatic memories of Barb being killed resurface. As the group tries to revive her, she comes face to face with Vecna.

While the kids in Hawkins definitely have their hands full, the same can be said about Joyce and Murray as they try to save Hopper from his Russian captors. As the latter faces the Demogorgon with Dmitri, a prison guard who tried to help him escape, and other prisoners, both a disguised Murray and Joyce watch from afar.

At that point, Hopper's rescuers are successful in eluding the Russians as they open the prison gate for their friend. Hawkin's former police chief, meanwhile, also succeeds in fending off the Demogorgon as the heavy metal door closes. As this happens, Hopper's hope of escaping is slowly materializing as he sees Joyce and Murray before him. He hugs her tightly as the show's part in Russia ends here.

As all of these things are happening, Eleven is still continuing her training with Dr. Brenner as he unlocks a memory buried deep in her mind. The orderly who befriended her begged Eleven to escape from the program after some of the older kids bullied her. The orderly then said that Brenner was behind everything and was planning to eliminate her.

Eleven, for her part, asked her new friend to escape with her. He then tells her that he won't be able to go far with a tracker on his neck. The younger child then removes it, which surprisingly unlocks the orderly's psychic powers. He uses his newly-returned abilities to kill the facility's guards and the other gifted kids in the program. At this point in the final episode, the parts of Nancy and Eleven's stories weave into one.

The orderly who befriended Eleven was revealed to be both Number One and the child of Victor Creel, Henry. As a child with psychic abilities, he used them to murder both his mother and sister and laid the blame on his father. Henry said that he performed these gruesome acts to escape the possibility of being admitted into a facility run by a certain Doctor Brenner. But even with all the things he did, the child still ended up under his care.

From there, Henry would be powered down by Brenner as the program expanded to train several children, Eleven included. With the latter's help, Henry would gain his abilities back to exact revenge upon the world. Finding her courage again, Eleven would fight Henry and come out on top. She then opened a portal to the Upside Down for the first time and transported Henry there, an act that would transform him into Vecna. The episode ends with this revelation, and Nancy being captured by Vecna.
