The Phoenix Suns are close to inking one of the top rising stars in the NBA in the form of Devin Booker to a multi-year max contract, which could be done as early as this coming weekend. According to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, the Suns has already put the offer on the shooting guard’s table.
Devin Booker and the Phoenix Suns are progressing toward finalizing a 5-year, $158M maximum contract extension as soon as the weekend, league sources tell ESPN. Suns presented the offer to Booker in Los Angeles today.
Barring any issues, Booker is expected to put ink on paper shortly after the July moratorium is lifted this Friday. This update also comes just after it was reported that Booker was upset with the Suns’ decision to waive his fellow Kentucky product, Tyler Ulis. Apparently, Booker’s resentment to that move by Phoenix has not significantly factored into his side’s negotiation with the Suns.
With the Suns selecting big man Deandre Ayton as the No. 1 overall pick in last month’s NBA Draft and the nearing finalization of an extension contract for Devin Booker, Phoenix is clearly betting on the pair as the one that will turn the franchise around and develop the team into a legitimate title contender in the future.
Last season, Booker averaged 24.9 points in 54 games as the Suns’ focal point on offense. He also posted 4.5 rebounds and 4.7 assists per contest.
The Suns are not expected to compete for a championship right away, but they are banking that they will become one at some point during the duration of Booker’s new deal.
