The Deandre Ayton contract dispute was one of the many issues the Phoenix Suns faced outside basketball this season. The team refused to give Ayton the max contract the center asked for, creating outside noise for the team. Despite that, the team trudged forward, rattling off 18 straight wins and a league-best 25 – 5 record.

Recently, Suns head coach Monty Williams spoke truthfully about the Ayton contract debacle. Williams felt partly responsible for the dispute and said that he understood the star center's side of things. Here's the full quote. (via Yahoo! Sports)

Suns' Monty Williams: “When you win as much as we did, and you make it to the Finals, I personally could see why he feels disrespected… From a personal perspective, I feel like I failed him… Because when we asked you to do all that we ask you to do and you go out there and do it and you still don't get what you want, that falls on my plate.”

It's easy to understand where Ayton is coming from regarding the contract extensions. He had an amazing playoff debut, including an incredible Finals performance. His performance, along with his 1st overall pick status, warranted a contract extension out of him. However, Suns owner Robert Sarver chose not to shell out the big bucks for their center

As for Ayton, the Phoenix Suns center doesn't take the contract extensions talk to heart. It shows both in his words and his play, as he's helpings the team into what could be another deep postseason run. The team has seemingly put behind all of the outside noise behind them, as they're focused on one goal only: win the NBA championship.
