The Phoenix Suns have found their man to be the franchise’s next head coach. That’s Utah Jazz assistant Igor Kokoskov, whom Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN is reporting as the Suns’ final choice to call the shots for the team starting next season.

The Phoenix Suns are hiring Utah Jazz assistant Igor Kokoskov as their new head coach, league sources tell ESPN. Kokoskov, a native of Serbia, will be the first European born head coach in the NBA.

As noted by Wojnarowski, this move is a historic one, as Igor Kokoskov is now the first non-American to lead a team’s coaching staff in the NBA.

Kokoskov has apparently bested the likes of San Antonio Spurs assistant James Borrego and former Charlotte Hornets head coach Steve Clifford for the Suns’ coaching gig.

Phoenix, however, is not a new basketball environment for Kokoskov, who was an assistant coach for the Suns from 2008 to 2013. Since then, he’s been part of the coaching staff of the Cleveland Cavaliers (2013-14) and the Orlando Magic (2014-15) before landing the same job in Salt Lake City.

Apart from those stints, Kokoskov had tenures as an assistant coach with the L.A. Clippers and the Detroit Pistons. He was part of the Pistons’ coaching staff that helped steer the team to a win in the 2004 NBA Finals.

In Phoenix, Kokoskov will busy himself finding a way to turn around a moribund franchise that has failed to win more than 23 games in each of the last three seasons.
