The Phoenix Suns have been looking for a point guard for months now, and the team could have had Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who is now with the L.A. Clippers, if owner Robert Sarver didn't get in the way.

According to Bob Young of The Athletic, Sarver — the club’s managing partner — overruled former general manager Ryan McDonough on a draft night trade which would have brought Shai Gilgeous-Alexander to Phoenix.

It’s worth noting that the Suns wouldn’t be in this fix if Robert Sarver, the club’s managing partner, had not reportedly overruled his then-general manager, Ryan McDonough, on draft night.

McDonough reportedly planned to package the club’s pick from Milwaukee and a player taken with the 16th pick to move up and draft Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, a point guard from Kentucky.

When Philadelphia offered the rights to Mikal Bridges for the rights to Zhaire Smith and Miami’s unprotected 2021 first-round pick, Sarver pushed for that deal. So the Suns moved up six spots to add their fourth young wing player.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander would have been the perfect point guard to run the Suns' offense. The 20-year-old is averaging 10.7 points, 3.3 rebounds and 2.9 assists per game for the Clippers and is an excellent defender. Once again, the Suns got in their own way.

McDonough was fired from his post before the season started. He didn't make many good moves while running the team, but acquiring Shai Gilgeous-Alexander would have been a great one.
