Former chief marketing officer of the U.S. Olympic Committee Rick Burton doesn't think the 2020 Olympics will take place this summer due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The NBA, MLB, NCAA and NHL all canceled play because of the spread of the virus. Olympics organizers have publicly insisted the games will go on as planned, but Burton sees the probability of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics continuing as scheduled this July and August decreasing by the day:

“A day ago or a week ago, I might have said 50/50 chance, but I think we’re zooming toward 20/80, and really 1/99,” Burton said on the Bloomberg Business of Sports podcast. “As each day goes by, and more and more people unfortunately succumb to this illness, it gets harder and harder to imagine that the Olympics can take place.”

The total budget for the Olympic games, including infrastructure upgrades around Japan, is more than $22 billion.

Team USA has won Gold at the Olympics for basketball the last two times. The most recent team won Gold in Rio back in 2016. That team was headlined by Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving and Carmelo Anthony.

Golden State Warriors head coach and Team USA assistant Steve Kerr says he's been in contact with San Antonio Spurs legend Gregg Popovich, who is the head coach of the USA Olympics basketball team. Kerr said last week that his group is preparing for the games until they are told the events are canceled.
