A historic college football rivalry is returning to the gridiron in 2024. Texas football and Texas A&M football will face off at the end of the 2024 season, per ESPN. The schools haven't played in more than a decade.

The game returns due to the transition of Texas from the Big 12 Conference in 2024 to the SEC. Texas A&M has been in the SEC for more than a decade. The two schools were once conference rivals in the Big 12. Oklahoma is also leaving the Big 12 to go to the SEC in 2024.

Texas A&M has a new coach roaming the sidelines in 2024, as Mike Elko took the job in College Station after leading the Duke Blue Devils in the ACC for two years. Mike Elko had previously served as an assistant at A&M. The Aggies fired Jimbo Fisher earlier in November.

Texas is playing in the Big 12 conference championship game on Saturday against Oklahoma State. The Longhorns have had an excellent season, going 11-1 in the regular season with their only loss to Oklahoma. The Longhorns also have one of the best non conference wins in all of college football this year, beating Alabama. The Longhorns are favored to win the Big 12 championship but may be left out of the College Football Playoff.

The Texas-Texas A&M game is expected to be scheduled in the final week of the 2024 season, per ESPN. The Longhorns and Aggies historically play their rivalry game around Thanksgiving.

Texas won the last meeting between the two schools, in 2011. The two schools have met 118 times, and Texas leads the series.
