Jirard Khalil, known in the video gaming community as The Completionist, bought all of the 3DS and Wii U games and apps from the Nintendo eShop, spending a total of $22,791 in the process.

Known for completing video games by unlocking all possible unlockables and achieving all achievements from various video games, The Completionist also did a completionist run for the Nintendo eShop by purchasing all of the possible 3DS and Wii U apps and games from the Nintendo eShop.

All of this has been done just prior to the Nintendo eShop closing on March 27, 2023. After this date, none of the 3DS and Wii U games from the online store will be purchasable and downloadable.

Why? The Completionist, apart from being a fan of video games, is a staunch advocate for video game preservation. Knowing that these games will forever be lost in time with pretty much no way to re-download the games again in the future, effectively locking them away forever, turning them into lost media. Many of these titles are eShop exclusive, which means these games aren't available anywhere else.

In the end, The Completionist purchased, downloaded, and archived 866 Wii U games and 1,547 3DS games, which includes downloadable content for all of the games. The games that were downloaded were also stored on hard drives for the sake of the digital preservation of video games. It took Jirard and his team 328 days and 464 eShop cards to accomplish, as he and his team fought an uphill battle against many safeguards Nintendo put in place that are meant to prevent overspending on their platforms, probably meant to make sure parents won't be bill shocked by their children's impulse purchases.

Thankfully, The Completionist started his task early, and he and his team managed to complete their task just about a few weeks before the deadline. For everyone else reading this, if this feat inspired you to do the same, you, unfortunately, cannot do so any more thanks to Nintendo's eShop safeguards and its looming closure.

Highlighting the importance of video game preservation, Jirard also promotes non-profits like The Video Game History Foundation and his own non-profit charity event called Preserved Play on April 15-16 on his Twitch channel to raise funds for them, where he is also planning to donate the 3DS and Wii U consoles and games involved in this completionist run.
