Los Angeles Lakers coach Frank Vogel is certainly no Pat Riley, Gregg Popovich or Doc Rivers. For Rick Pitino, that's exactly what he wants and exactly what the Los Angeles Lakers need.

Talking with the New York Post, Pitino noted how the league has changed, and how the outspoken coaches are not the type that work with today's players.

“It’s a player’s league, and he’s with two of the top five players,’’ Pitino told The Post. “Frank is the perfect coach for those two guys and the team. He’s going to do all his work behind the scenes, get them ready, never be on camera, never get any credit. And he wants it that way. His perfect scenario is them winning a championship, never mention his name and get ready for next season.”

Is a coach in today's NBA supposed to be like a referee, where it's a good thing if you don't see or hear about them, but if you do it means they've done something wrong? In some scenarios it could very well be.

As seen in recent weeks, coaches who do not perform when it counts are easily expendable over star players. The coach will take the blame for a bad season (or bad finish to a season) while the player slides, but the player will always get the credit for a good season.

Frank Vogel seems to understand that and follows the motto to just get the work done and keep your head down. As long as the Lakers continue winning and LeBron and AD are happy with him, the philosophy will allow him to keep his job for the foreseeable future.
