While there were a host of different problems that plagued the Minnesota Timberwolves in their epic Game 3 choke job against the Minnesota Timberwolves, one in particular centered squarely on head coach Chris Finch.

Specifically, the Timberwolves coach refused to call a timeout even as the Memphis Grizzlies were roaring back into the game during the second half. What was once a 26-point lead evaporated as the Griz went on a 21-0 run without a timeout in between.

Finch was asked about the decision, or lack thereof, after the game.

“Burned a lot early, so I was hoping that we would just be able to kind of get through to the 4th a little deeper before hand,” said the T-Wolves coach on not calling a timeout during the Grizzlies run.

What's frustrating about that was the Timberwolves were also up 26 points in the middle of the second quarter. As the Grizzlies were making their run, Chris Finch called not one, not two, but three timeouts between the 4:56 and the 3:21 mark. Memphis managed to trim the lead all the way to seven, but the break in momentum was at least a deliberate attempt to stem the tide.

They eventually built that lead back up to 25 later in the third period, which points to the timeouts at least playing a role in successfully keeping the Grizzlies' comeback at bay.

Yes, the Timberwolves excessively burned timeouts early on already to preserve their lead. But a dumbfounding 21-0 run is exactly the reason you save them for. Minnesota looked shell-shocked on and clearly needed a breather, a pep talk, a change of pace, anything to really disrupt the momentum that clearly had swung the other way.

Had the Timberwolves taken Game 3, they've firmly be in the driver's seat in the series with Game 4 coming on their home floor. Instead, they need to overcome a dispiriting display to tie the series at two apiece.
