The Minnesota Timberwolves are currently retooling their roster, and their recent moves are being linked to their new associate head coach David Vanterpool.

The Timberwolves recently acquired Jake Layman, Noah Vonleh, and Shabazz Napier in separate deals. According to John Meyer of Forbes, Vanterpool likely had a hand on the recent acquisitions. The new Timberwolves associate head coach previously worked together with all three players in Portland.

Layman spent three seasons in Portland, Napier played two years, while Vonleh was with the Trail Blazers for two and a half seasons. All three players likely caught the attention of Vanterpool on the free agency market, as he was known to work with young players during his time in Portland.

Minnesota agreed to a three-year, $11.5 million contract with Layman, which was made possible by facilitating a sign-and-trade deal with the Trail Blazers. The 25-year-old forward became a dispensable asset for Portland after they acquired Kent Bazemore in a trade and drafted Nassir Little.

The Timberwolves acquired Napier along with Treveon Graham from the Golden State Warriors, who got both players in the deal that sent D'Angelo Russell to the Bay Area. Vonleh, on the other hand, reportedly signed a one-year deal with Minnesota, per Jon Krawczynski of The Athletic.
