The Minnesota Timberwolves made one of the most surprising trades of the 2022 calendar year. In a shocking turn of events, they traded for Utah Jazz center Rudy Gobert. Now, the team will enter the 2022-23 season as a dark-horse contender behind their twin towers of Gobert and Karl-Anthony Towns, along with Anthony Edwards.
Based on this recent report, though, it seems like the Timberwolves were approached about making a different blockbuster trade before winding up with Gobert. According to a recent report, the Nets apparently offered Kevin Durant to the Wolves for a trade package with Towns AND Edwards, per Yahoo Sports' Vincent Goodwill on the Posted Up with Chris Haynes podcast:
āIād heard that Brooklyn came to Minnesota and said, āWe want Karl-Anthony Towns, we want the Ant-Man,Ā andĀ we want four draft picks,'ā
As good as Kevin Durant is, if that offer truly did come through, the Timberwolves almost certainly laughed the Nets off the phone. That's a pair of young franchise cornerstones PLUS a boatload of draft capital for a 33-year-old KD who has dealt with injury issues in recent years. And would Durant even be happy on a Minnesota team without either of those two still there? One of those guys plus picks for KD would make a bit more sense, but both of them and all those picks is crazy talk.
The Timberwolves ultimately chose to give up a massive haul for Gobert, which almost certainly is playing a role in the KD trade talks.Ā The logic is that if Gobert's value was that, how much more will Brooklyn ask for KD? The Nets are apparently hoping for a bidding war to drive up the price for Durant, but they don't seem to be getting the results they want.
Hence, everything is at a standstill right now.
