A bigger role on the team awaits third-year pro and Minnesota Timberwolves guard Tyus Jones. Jones, who was drafted 24th overall in 2015 by the Cleveland Cavaliers before being traded to Minnesota, is currently listed as the main backup for Timberwolves newcomer Jeff Teague.

In an interview with Jace Frederick of Twincities.com, Jones claims that being the first point guard off the bench is a role he’s intent on embracing fully.

Asked about that primary backup point guard role, Jones said, “that’s something I want.”

Jones has spent the past two seasons buried on Minnesota’s bench with Ricky Rubio and Kris Dunn eating up most of the minutes at the point guard position, With the two gone, however, Jones is left as the only one left to handle backup point guard duties.

With that, he’s in line for more minutes and bigger contribution to the team. In two seasons so far in the NBA, the ex-Duke Blue Devil has averages of 3.8 points and 2.7 assists per game to go with a 38.9 percent clip from beyond the arc on just 13.9 minutes per contest.

One of Jones’ best quality is his leadership, which he showed during Duke’s national championship run in 2015. Jahlil Okafor was the best player on that team, but it was Jones who held the group together, even winning the NCAA Basketball Tournament Most Outstanding Player that year.
