There is a chance that Tennessee Titans cornerback Malcolm Butler could be one of the surprise cuts for the team this offseason, according to John Glennon of The Athletic. The Titans are projected to have over $51 million in cap space this offseason, according to spotrac.com.

Of the five players listed here, Butler would easily be the biggest surprise cut. That’s primarily because the team would still have $6 million worth of guaranteed money — “dead money” — that would count against the salary cap. In addition, the Titans are facing the possibility of losing fellow cornerback Logan Ryan, who is a pending unrestricted free agent. So despite the fact that the Titans would free up more than $7 million dollars in cap space by cutting Butler, it seems unlikely he will be let go. He had adequate numbers last season, picking off a couple of passes and posting a Pro Football Focus pass-coverage grade of 64.2, which trailed Adoree Jackson, Tramaine Brock and Kevin Byard among the team’s regular defensive backs.

That seems like a large amount of money, but the team has pending free agents that are going to require large contracts like Ryan Tannehill and Derrick Henry. Jack Conklin and Logan Ryan are going to need a big contract offer to keep them in Tennessee.

If the Titans want to bring those guys back and still be a player in free agency, the team is going to need to open up more cap space. Glennon wrote this on why Butler could be one of the shocking cuts.

It still seems hard to imagine the team would cut Malcolm Butler because he is still productive, but if the team needs that $7 million in cap space, he could be gone.
