Tennessee Titans quarterback Ryan Tannehill made headlines last week when he touched on the team’s decision to select former Liberty passer Malik Willis in the 2022 NFL Draft.
Not only did Tannehill note that the Titans did not notify him that they were drafting Willis, but he also went on to add that it is not his “job” to play the role of a mentor for the rookie. Nonetheless, Tannehill did add that it would be a “great thing” if Willis ends up learning from him over the coming months.
Multiple players and coaches in the NFL have since taken a stance on this “mentor” debate, and now Titans head coach Mike Vrabel is chiming in with his viewpoint on the matter. In speaking during the first day of the team's rookie minicamp schedule on Friday, Vrabel sided with his veteran passer.
“I thought Ryan handled that very well,” Vrabel said. “I thought he was genuine and authentic. I know Ryan is a great teammate. That is not his job. His job is to help us win games.”
For the first time in the offseason, Vrabel had an opportunity to watch Willis in action in a Titans uniform. Vrabel added that while Willis had a couple of botched snaps during his time on the field, he saw good poise from the former Liberty standout over the course of the day.
Tennessee's rookie minicamp schedule will run up until Sunday, which will then be followed up by the start of its OTA offseason workouts on May 23.
