The Tennessee Titans agreed to a trade with the Los Angeles Rams last week to acquire wide receiver Robert Woods. However, that trade hasn't yet been finalized because of salary cap issues, so the Titans are working on making Woods fit under the cap.

To do that, ESPN's Field Yates says Tennessee has converted nearly $11 million of All-Pro safety Kevin Byard's base salary into a signing bonus, creating nearly $9 million in cap space. The Tennessean's Ben Arthur confirmed this and explained the Woods-related reasoning:

The Titans traded for Woods to help replace Julio Jones, who was released after an injury-plagued 2021 campaign. Woods is recovering from a torn ACL, but the hope is he's good to go for the 2022 season.

Woods played a key role for the Rams over the last five seasons, both in terms of production on the field and as a mentor for Cooper Kupp. The veteran wideout had two 1,000-yard seasons with Los Angeles and was close to a third in 2020. He was also on track for one in 2017 but was limited to 12 games.

If he comes back healthy, Woods should do well playing alongside Ryan Tannehill, A.J. Brown and Derrick Henry in Tennessee.

As for Byard, he has been a mainstay on the Titans' defense since he came into the NFL in 2016. He has been an All-Pro twice, including in 2021, and he was surely happy to restructure his contract in order to make this Woods trade official.
