Top 10 New Games of April 2023

10. Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection
Release Date: April 14, 2023
Developed By: Capcom
Published By: Capcom
Platforms: PC, Nintendo Switch, PS4

Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection brings previously hard-to-access series Mega Man Battle Network to more accessible platforms, making the former GameBoy Advance exclusives playable on PC, Nintendo Switch, and the PlayStation 4. It's a shame that this Collection isn't going to the Xbox One as well, but this is still a great way to reintroduce the series to a new generation of fans. New to the games in this Collection is the competitive battling and battle chip trading via online multiplayer, as well as trading customizations from certain games, allowing players to actually play games with their friends online. Finally, the games will also have new things for old fans as the Japanese version of the game will be used as the base of the Collection, which means previously Japan-only features will become available now to Western players.

Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection collects 10 games from the GameBoy Advance. The Battle Network games feature deck-building mechanics and card-based combat. Compared to usual Mega Man games, Battle Network puts Mega Man on rectangle-based grids that they can move freely on, with attacks affecting different zones on the grids, making positioning an important aspect of the games.

9. Sherlock Holmes: The Awakened
Release Date: April 11, 2023
Developed By: Frogwares
Published By: Forgwares
Platforms: PC, Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X

We haven't had a proper Sherlock Holmes game in a while, so it's fantastic that we're getting a new one this month. However, this isn't your standard Sherlock Holmes affair, as The Awakened features more supernatural elements, particularly the Cthulu Mythos. In this remake of the 2007 adventure hit, the game's script has been updated and substantially rewritten to keep things fresh and interesting even for those who have already completed the original game.

As a 3D adventure game, Sherlock Holmes puts players in the shoes of the famed detective, allowing them to investigate crime scenes, interrogate suspects and witnesses, and explore locations in both first-person and third-person perspectives. Although the game plays out a lot like a 3D adventure game, Sherlock Holmes: The Awakened retains a lot of point-and-click gameplay elements that make it in tune with a lot of its predecessors.

8. Meet Your Maker
Release Date: April 4, 2023
Developed By: Behaviour Interactive
Published By: Behaviour Interactive
Platforms: PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X

If there's anything that builder games have proven about gamers, it's that there are many creative geniuses out there who are willing to spend thousands of hours of their life creating custom arenas and game modes for other fans to enjoy. Meet Your Maker has the potential to unleash all of that creative genius and let them loose to a flood of new custom arenas and dungeons. Instead of just being your run-of-the-mill action shooter, Meet Your Maker allows players to create their own fortresses, which other players then attempt to raid.

Of course, a competent builder would be nothing if the gameplay is bland, but thankfully Meet Your Maker seems very fun to play both as a raider and a builder. As the raider, players are given an array of weapons they can raid with and a grappling hook that allows them to maneuver and navigate around the fortresses. Meanwhile, the game can be played either solo or with a party, enhancing the shared experiences one could have in the game.

7. Honkai Star Rail
Release Date: April 26, 2023
Developed By: HoYoverse
Published By: HoYoverse
Platforms: PC, Mobile

HoYoverse's Genshin Impact took the world by storm when it was released a couple of years ago, and it continues to be a relevant game today. But not all Genshin Impact fans know about HoYoverse's earlier successful game, Honkai Impact. Now, HoYoverse is going to try another shot at making Honkai its very own global sensation with the release of the newest game in the series: Honkai Star Rail.

However, Honkai Star Rail is significantly different compared to its predecessors. Instead of being an action-intensive game, Honkai Star Rail is a turn-based strategy game. Players can take control of a party of up to four characters, and take them to explore dungeons and the open world. Honkai Star Rail takes existing characters and their respective models from Honkai Impact 3rd, which means fans of the series have extra incentive to continue their journeys in Star Rail. Who cares about gameplay differences when you can still play with your waifus, right?

6. Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp
Release Date: April 21, 2023
Developed By: WayForward
Published By: Nintendo
Platforms: Nintendo Switch

Advance Wars is finally coming to the Nintendo Switch this month after a very long delay. Re-Boot Camp brings two games into one package, remaking the two games of the series coming from the GameBoy Advance. With remastered graphics, Advance Wars looks as charming as ever.

In Advance Wars, players take control of the four nations' commanders in either single-player campaigns and skirmishes or multiplayer battles. Each commander has their own set of traits and special abilities that affect the way they play their game. The game features turn-based tactics as they try to strategize and outmaneuver their opponents, managing their resources and building up their armies in hundreds of different maps available.

5. Minecraft Legends
Release Date: April 18, 2023
Developed By: Mojang Studios, Blackbird Interactive
Published By: Xbox Game Studios
Platforms: PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, Nintendo Switch

Immerse yourself in the worlds and nether realms of Minecraft in Minecraft Legends. After Dungeons, where players got to explore dungeons as their favorite Minecraft avatars, Minecraft Legends now put players on massive open battlefields, fighting against the rising threat of piglins.

Players take control of a hero that rallies their troops and workers, playing out as a base-building strategy game in the vein of games like Age of Empires and Red Alert. Having a good mix of both action and strategy, Minecraft Legends is a great way to introduce the younger generation of players to new genres and gameplay elements. The game offers both a single-player campaign and online multiplayer game modes.

4. The Mageseeker: A League of Legends Story
Release Date: April 18, 2023
Developed By: Digital Sun
Published By: Riot Forge
Platforms: PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, Nintendo Switch

Explore Demacia in this new game set in the world of League of Legends. In this action RPG, players take control of the spell-stealing mage Sylas who has just broken free of his unjust captivity at the Mageseekers’ hands. Wielding the chains that once bound you, you must liberate your homeland from tyranny, one Mageseeker at a time. Meet familiar faces as you explore Demacia and attempt to rise a rebellion that will topple the ruling class, meeting familiar faces like Lux, Garen, and Jarvan IV along the way.

Created by the same team that made Moonlighter, Mageseeker features unique gameplay elements, such as the ability to steal spells from the enemies you encounter and use those same spells to vanquish them, base-building mechanics that make your runs much more potent, and intense melee combat involving the chains that used to bind you as a prisoner of the Mageseekers.

3. EA Sports PGA Tour
Release Date: April 7, 2023
Developed By: EA Tiburon
Published By: Electronic Arts
Platforms: PC, PS5, Xbox Series X

This is another game that has been a long time coming. EA Sports PGA Tour is finally back after a very, very long hiatus, and it's setting out to challenge the simulated realism of PGA Tour 2K with its own take on gameplay that leans more towards the arcade. It's actually great that the two games are headed in totally different directions in terms of gameplay as it gives players ample choices and options, while both games have some of the best and most realistically detailed graphics we've ever seen in video games.

EA Sports PGA Tour rivals PGA Tour 2K and we're excited to see how the tee-off will proceed. Which golf game will prove to be the better shot?

2. Dead Island 2
Release Date: April 21, 2023
Developed By: Dambuster Studios
Published By: Deep Silver
Platforms: PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X

The long-awaited Dead Island 2 is finally here. Early previews and impressions reveal that it's exactly the mindless fun action game that many zombie shooters who just want to have a chill time would want. Are zombie shooter games like Left 4 Dead and Back 4 Blood stress you out because they are too frenetic? Are games like Days Gone and The Last of Us too grim and dark for you? Dead Island 2 offers a much more stress-free, less serious, action-packed experience that makes you feel more like a Zombieland action star than a helpless victim of the zombie apocalypse.

Set about 10 years after the events of Dead Island and Dead Island: Riptide, Dead Island 2 differentiates itself from its predecessors by taking place in the city of Los Angeles, which has been quarantined due to the zombie outbreak. Featuring new gameplay elements and fighting mechanics compared to its predecessors, familiar systems like the Rage System and the crafting systems return to the game. Will you be able to live a life of luxury in Los Angles once you've taken care of the zombie hordes?

1. Star Wars Jedi: Survivor
Release Date: April 28, 2023
Developed By: Respawn Entertainment
Published By: Electronic Arts
Platforms: PC, PS5, Xbox Series X

Revealed surprisingly close to its release date, we only found out that Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is actually coming out this month only recently. Regardless, we know that Star Wars Jedi: Survivor will be a swell game just like its predecessor, mixing lightsaber and force combat with Soulslike mechanics. Star Wars Jedi: Survivor continues the story of Cal Kestis as he continues his fugitive life, avoiding contact with the Galactic Empire and other new villainous enemies introduced in this game.

Returning from the previous game is stance-based combat, with new stances added to the game for additional variety in the ways the player can engage in combat. The players are also given the new force stasis ability which allows them to freeze enemies and projectiles in time, giving them a window of opportunity for attack, escape, and maneuverability.
