Toy Story 5 is moving along. And it's sounding like it's found its director.

The MontyVerse attended a screening of Inside Out 2, during which Pixar CCO Pete Docter seemed to indicate that Andrew Stanton will direct the next Toy Story. Stanton is responsible for overseeing the hit Finding Nemo.

The CCO was very casual when he mentioned this news — so it didn't sound like an official announcement. However, the fact that he said it publicly brings us to that conclusion.

If this statement from Docter is true, we can be in for a special treat.

About Toy Story 5

Toy Story made history in 1995 as the first entirely CGI animated film. From there, IGN reports the film series has generated $3 billion. Toy Story 4 raked in $1.07 billion worldwide in 2019. So, with the upcoming release, we can expect the success to continue.

A few things are known about the upcoming film.

One is that Tim Allen will reprise his role as Buzz Lightyear. He announced the news last year on X, saying, “See ya soon, Woody, you are a sad strange little man and you have my pity. And off we go to a number 5! To infinity and beyond!”

It must be nice for Allen to become the character again. After all, Chris Evans took over the role in 2022 for the movie Lightyear. The film flopped on its opening weekend, earning $51.7 million in the U.S. Daily Mail reports that the movie lost the studio an estimated $106 million. Beyond that, it was pulled from numerous theaters due to a gay scene that didn't sit well with some countries.

It's not confirmed whether Tom Hanks, who voiced Woody in the first four Toy Story films, will return.

Beyond Allen, no other cast has been announced yet.

Looking at the plot of the new film, we might witness Andy's return as he graduates from college. We also might see the plot split into two parts. The first might focus on Buzz and other toys helping Bonnie through 1st or 3rd grade (depending on whether two years have passed since Toy Story 4). The second half might focus on Woody's new carnival life, where we might see Andy discover him while out and about.

No official storyline has been announced or revealed, so these are just guesses. All that is known is what we saw when Toy Story 4 ended. In that film, Bonnie creates a new toy named Forky. Forky didn't see himself as a toy but as trash. On a road trip with Bonnie's family, there's an encounter with Bo's lamp at an antique shop, where Woody reunites with her and her sheep at a playground. Additionally, after being lost at a carnival, Buzz becomes a prize toy. However, he escapes with Ducky and Bunny and puts a plan in motion to rescue Forky, who is held by Gabby as a hostage at the antique store. Woody and Buzz are about to go home, but Woody realizes he can live without Bo. Woody gives his sheriff badge to Jessie, who becomes Bonnie's room leader.

So, we'll see soon if it's official that Andrew Stanton will direct Toy Story 5. If so, it could be huge for the film franchise, considering his previous successes.
