We created a EA Sports UFC 5 Guide on how to perform and counter takedowns in the game. In case you're new to the series, Takedowns are a technique in UFC which allow a fighter to get their opponent off-balance by literally trying to take them down. Ultimately, the goal for the fighter is to try and be the fighter on top, so you can pummel your foe into submission. However, even fighters defending takedowns can block, and even counter said moves, giving them an advantage. In this guide, we'll show you how to perform and counter takedowns in UFC 5.

UFC 5 – How To Takedown in UFC 5

  • Single-Leg Takedown – LT+X+A (L2+Square+X)
  • Double-Leg Takedown – LT+Y+B (L2+Triange+Circle)
  • Power-Takedowns – Same exact inputs as single and double-leg, but must hold buttons instead of pressing them.
  • Clinch-Takedown – RB+A or B (R1+X or Circle)

Single-leg takedowns are the easiest to perform since most fighters know how to do it. Double-leg takedowns are also quite simple to perform. Clinch-Takedowns require the fighter to actually have the ability before performing it.

However, if your opponent knows how to counter, you might initiate a takedown drive. During this moment, you need to move the Left Stick (LS) towards the direction you'd like the takedown to go in. Your opponent will try to match your movements, so you need to be a little tricky and catch them off guard. Now that we know how to perform a takedown, let's take a look at ways for you to defend yourself against one.

How To Counter Takedowns in UFC 5

To defend a takedown in UFC 5, hold RT + LT (R2 + L2) when your opponent attempts a takedown. However, there's four more tips and moves that will help you perform special counters when the time comes. Let's go over them.

  • Denial Timing
    • If you react quickly enough, you'll be able to counter and take the dominant position. However, if too late, this will lead to a drive where you need match the direction your opponent is going towards. To perform this, keep holding both triggers while moving the Left Stick.
  • Judo Reversals
    • To perform a Takedown Judo Reversal, hold RB+LT+RT (R1+L2+R2). The player must have the Judo Reversal ability, or else a normal denial happens instead. Additionally, these require extremely fast timing to perform, or else the takedown won't be denied.
  • Submission Reversals
    • To perform a Takedown Submission Reversal, hold LB+LT+RT (L1+L2+R2). Once again, the player must have the ability and must perform the action quickly.
  • Pre-emptive Deny:
    • Fortunately, there's a way to make both Judo and Submission Reversals much easier to perform. To prepare for a potential takedown, we recommend you hold LT+RT before they event attempt the move. However, this also makes your fighter drop his hands, which could lead to trouble if you guessed wrong.

Overall, it's important to learn your opponent's rhythm as the fight goes on. Over time, and with more experience, you'll slowly start to get better at predicting these moments. It takes most fighters about half a second to perform a takedown, so speed is the name of the game. That being said, you have enough moves in your arsenal to counter.
