Leon Edwards received the bad news that Jorge Masvidal was out of their fight at UFC 269. Many welterweights offered to step in and face the Englishman.

Khamzat Chimaev was unsurprisingly among the fighters hoping to step in at UFC 269. The two were supposed to fight in the past but the fight was never able to come to fruition.

Leon Edwards recently spoke to ESPN about Jorge Masvidal pulling out of the matchup. He also spoke about Khamzat Chimaev trying to fight him.

“I feel like I’ve paved my way,” the UFC welterweight said via MMANews. “I’ve done what I need to do to earn my position. I don’t feel he’s (Chimaev) earned to fight the #3 guy in the world. The only reason I was gonna fight him before was because I was inactive for such a long time. I wanted to get active and I wanted to fight, you know. That was the only reason.

“I’ve been matched up, what, three times with him? And three times the fight fell out. So, I reckon down the road we’ll probably fight. Let him work his way up, let him do what he needs to do. I’m looking ahead and looking forward to the title shot.”

Leon Edwards wasn't looking for just anyone at UFC 269. He wanted a fight that makes sense. Khamzat Chimaev was not a fight that makes sense.

Leon Edwards plans to sit out and wait for the next welterweight title shot. It is still unclear when UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman plans to return to the cage.
