UFC 261 with Chris Weidman facing Uriah Hall was hyped up for a long time. Unfortunately, Weidman suffered a gruesome leg injury during the fight and had to be stretchered off. Many stars and athletes poured out their support for Weidman, including Conor McGregor, who issued his support after the scary injury.
Hoping Chris Weidman has full recovery! Never nice to see.
Crazy is the calf kick. No skill, balance, or flexibility, or anything does it take. It’s like watching a punt of a pig skin in the 50s. Up the yard!
Crazy how it can go either way. One great for you, or real bad against— Conor McGregor (@TheNotoriousMMA) April 25, 2021
Just 17 seconds into the fight, it was over. That's never want you want to see, and the chilling injury to Weidman hit the sports world with sadness. While that was the big moment of the evening- for unfortunate reasons- one fight before that had to be ended prematurely due to a doctor's stoppage.
Still, the biggest story of the night was the fight between Hall and Weidman, and not for good reasons. The first kick Weidman attempted resulted in the injury, and Hall was also shaken up after and offered support for his opponent.
The UFC world and fighting community poured out their support as well, which is expected after an injury of that magnitude on that big of a stage. As for McGregor, he said it could have been caused by many different things, one being wear and tear.
He had to have a load of micro fractures in the leg possibly for it snap then. The placement of the kick was nice enough. It wasn’t fully checked. He hit the meat. Enough of it anyway. Had to have been damaged over time without knowing. Wear and tear.
Careful on them kicks lads!— Conor McGregor (@TheNotoriousMMA) April 25, 2021
Regardless, the Weidman and Hall fight will be remembered for an unfortunate reason. He left the arena on a stretcher and it was tough to watch for everybody. The leg snapped back and the gruesome injury had everybody cringing and holding back teams.
As Conor McGregor and many others said, here's to a quick and speedy recovery for Weidman and the hope is that he can be back in the ring before we know it.
