Josh Thomson spoke about welterweight contender Khamzat Chimaev's victory at UFC 267 on his podcast, WEIGHIN' IN. While the Sweden-based fighter impressed many people, Thomson found himself doubting he could beat two top welterweights.
“I think no matter what, he has a hard time with Colby Covington, and [Kamaru Usman],” Josh Thomson said (h/t Sportskeeda). “I think Covington may just press the pace because I haven’t seen [Khamzat] for more than three rounds. So I don’t know how he’ll do in a five-round fight!”

While Josh Thomson doesn't see him beating Kamaru Usman or Colby Covington, he does see him besting other welterweight contenders. Gilbert Burns is one of the people that comes to mind for me.
Khamzat Chimaev's height and length are something Josh Thomson's podcasting partner John McCarthy really likes. He even expects Chimaev to find success on the ground.
“He does [have better stand-up than Burns], and he’s way longer,” McCarthy said of Chimaev. “I think they’re close, they both have power. I think [Chimaev] is longer and Gilbert will have to be reaching to get to him. Gilbert is not going to be able to just take him down. He’ll have to hit him with a shot first… Chimaev is gonna get that takedown because he’s fast. And speed changes the equation quickly… Right now, at his age, with the skill set he possesses, he’s good!”
There is a lot to be excited about for Khamzat Chimaev, even if it's believed he wouldn't beat Kamaru Usman. Josh Thomson and John McCarthy both agree he could be a problem in the already stacked welterweight division.
