Trevor Wittman has done great things with Kamaru Usman ever since the UFC welterweight champion made the move out to train Colorado. They have been knocking off everyone at welterweight and there are only a few names left including Leon Edwards.

Kamaru Usman did face Leon Edwards back in 2015. The Nigerian-American used his wrestling to win a decision. Trevor Wittman sees that as a perfect rematch as both men have changed a lot.

“I think (we want) a new challenge,” the UFC welterweight champion's coach told MMA Junkie on what he wants next for Usman. “Leon is a new challenge to me. That was so long ago, and I wasn’t his coach. I just want the best. As a coach, you want the best challenges. We want to go out there and make sure that we’re not hesitating and making different decisions and then seeing if we can change game plans up in fights. That’s a cool thing, too, fighting differently than you did the first time when you fought him. So that’s always a cool challenge for me as a coach. I’m open to anything. At this level, we want the best. That’s it.”

The UFC welterweight champion has been taking on the best fighters in the division and he has slowly been cleaning it out. Leon Edwards is largely seen as the most logical choice for the next title shot considering his impressive win streak.

Kamaru Usman is not set to return until mid-2022. He wants to take some time off before returning in full force to defend his UFC title.
