Golden State Warriors All-Star point guard D'Angelo Russell has opened up about his rather colorful past. Now at 23 years of age and in his fifth season in the league, the former second overall pick is now ready to talk about his maturity level — or lack thereof — during his spell with the Los Angeles Lakers.

Russell was selected by L.A. with the second pick in 2015, and at one point, there was some belief that he was on his way to be the team's next cornerstone superstar. Things did not exactly work out for Russell and the Lakers, and the 6-foot-4 point guard admits this was something he was partly to blame for:

“When it came to shootaround, I was the young guy who wasn’t paying attention,” Russell said, via Anthony Slater of The Athletic. “I was joking around, going around laughing, untying everybody’s shoes. Little shit like that. People see that.”

Russell had a sense of invincibility and an unshakable level of self-confidence, and perhaps to some extent, understandably so. This didn't bode well with his then-head coach, Byron Scott, who at one point in the season, decided to yank his prized guard from the starting lineup.

The youngster even admitted he would purposefully avoid Scott when walking to the bench, in addition to other antics:

“I acted really young about it,” Russell admitted, talking about his rather undesirable reaction to being benched by Scott. “I did all the antics. Anything you could think of, I’d do it. Just to make a scene about it.”

This appears to be all in the past for D'Angelo Russell, who now seems to have already learned from his mistakes as a kid. Being able to speak about it so openly is definitely a sign of maturity, and at this point, it looks like he is ready to just focus on his basketball while keeping his head down.
